Well, odd to start with Slackware 9.0... its one of the few that doesn't configure X for you, it just comes with an /etc/X11/XF86Config file that is uber-generic so you can have a GUI while configuring things by hand. To build a new one:
X -configure
Then follow the directions on how to test that, btw ctrl+alt+backspace will take you out of the X test. If it looks cleaner then what you've got, copy it to /etc/X11/XF86Config and just startx... uhmm... there's also some binary drivers from ATI available, but they haven't made a set for XFree 4.3.0, which you've got, but give them a week or so... also its just their brand spanking new cards, 8000+ I think.
