I have an Ensoniq ES1371 sound card which works only intermitantly. On rare occasions it's detected while booting and works fine, but other times the module doesn't load (lsmod doesn't show it), so obviously, it doesn't work. I've tried inserting the module manually and it gives me the following errors:

I should also add that alsaconf detects NO PCI or PnP soundcards.... but the Ensonic card is in /proc/pci

About the best advice I can give you is to open a term as root and type dmesg and copy the contents of your printout here and someone might be able to step in and help you out. I use the same card and have never had a problem always worked with every distro right out the box. Could it be a hardware problem?

It's quite possibly a hardware problem. I looked through the output from dmesg and saw no reference to the soundcard at all, but i'll post it anyway.

Hi, have you recently recompile your kernel? I had this problem after I recompiled my kernel, and the solution I used was to compile sound support as a module, but don't compile OSS built in, I just didn't compile OSS.

Once you've disabled OSS, and made Sound as a module, you should recompile and then recompile your modules too. Then recompile the alsa-drivers and then run alsaconf or modprobe them manually.
