Have you opened up a mixer, and checked all the levels are reasonably high?
Have you disabled plug'n'play in your bios?
Have you tried the command lsmod as root? This should show you which modules are running. Post the output here.
hey ...
i do not know what you mean whith have you opend up a mixer and checked all the levels are reasonably high
and i have disabled plug'n'play in my bios

Have a look in /etc/modules.conf
You should find a couple of lines like -
above snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-slot-0 snd-emu10k1
They are for your SBlive!
Do you have any other lines that relate to any other sound or Via 8233? If so, try deleting them and seeing if that helps. It should stop your OS loading drivers for the other sound card.
You could also try looking in the mandrake control centre>hardware>soundcard to see if it has offered you the option of using the emu10k1 driver - Your soundcard "sounds" like a similar model to my one, and it offers me an "audigy" driver as well as the emu10k1 driver, but I had to run the sound config option to make sure it was using the emu10k1
My computer has on-board sound disabled in the BIOS. Mandrake 9.1 still detects it and includes the driver, along with the SB Live 5.1 driver (snd-cmipci & snd-emu10k1). This doesn't seem to bother the sound system: it still works OK.
If your OS is Mandrake 9.1, look here for a possible fix:
Even if you're not using Mandrake 9.1, your problem may be just that the sound is muted. Look in your distribution for a mixer application. It will open a window with sound sliders, just like the Volume Control applet in Windows, the one you get by double-clicking on the speaker icon in the system tray. Once you have a mixer window open, make sure the sliders are towards the top, and look for a 'mute' setting that you can turn off. It's for this sort of reason that it's always a good idea to post what version of Linux you're running; it helps the helpers.
I just wanted to say thanks to LinuxQuestions and Bigjohn for the info about SBlive souncard. I could not get my SBlive soundcard to work and could not figure out why, after reading bigjohns post, I went to Mandrake Control Center and found that my new SBlive card was using my old onboard sound drivers, now i have Sound!! Thanks :-)
when run harddrake 2 version 1.1.8
i see 2 sound cards the vt8233 [ac97 audio controller]
if i click on run config tool i see it's using the driver snd-emu10k1
i can't disable this device wile i disablet it in the bios and i cant seem to find a place to disable this device in mandrake it self
when i click on run config tool at SB LIVE!(audio) it also runs under snd-emu10k1
and when i typ /etc/modules.conf under my user or under root it says premission denied
and i looked at that other topic and my sound was already on and not muted
i have mandrake on 4 other computers that didnt gave any problems.... the sound all works on the other computers...
but it gives problems
i noticed that my boxes gave a bit of a ticking sound when i switched with the things on kmix so i think it does work only isn't used as the default driver
i just tried switching the cable to my onboard sound system... and... well if i play a sond it works with out problem...
so i need to find a way to set the default driver or delete the other one
Just setting Plug n Play to No in the BIOS does not disable on-board sound; all it does is make the BIOS scan the motherboard for devices and their IRQs, rather than leaving it up to the OS. To disable the on-board sound, look for 'PCI Configuration', which could be under 'Advanced' or something similar. My BIOS has an 'On-board PCI Devices Control' item under that heading. Here you need to set on-board sound to 'Disabled'.
