"most" != "all"

If it was COM3 in Windows its still the equivalent of COM3 in Linux. This is based on its IRQ (interrupt) setting at the hardware level. You can't just make it COM4 by choosing that device in Linux - you'd have to change it first in the IBM's hardware setup (usually hitting F2 during boot when prompted to hit that or something similar will get you into hardware setup). If its working in Windows on the same IBM then there's no conflict so I wouldn't change it - I'd just tell Linux to use the device at COM3.

You might need a third party driver, and they are usually not free. For my old computer it had a Conexant modem, it installed automatically on Windows until it fried, its now seen as a videocard for some reason. I found Linux drivers at http://www.linuxant.com. The drivers in that site are for Conexant modems, but if you go the manifactures site then you can find info. Modems are usually Lucent, Conexant, or Agere.

I did choose /dev/ttys0, /dev/ttys1 ,... but None worked ! I said that in my first post ( /dev/ttys0-4 ), When I press on Query modem it says it cant open modem & when I just choose it & want to dial with it, it says modem is busy !

I used Conexant application & it said my Subvendor is IBM & I dunno, it seems it is not Conexant ! Every time I am using linux, something stops me Now this modem !
