Printing with CUPS is slow

Ok, heres the deal:
Distro: Suse 9.2
Printer on /dev/lp0
Printer: HP PSC500
Driver: HPIJS

Whenever I submit a job vir printing, it prints verrrrryy sloooow. In fact, one line each10 seconds (which aint normal).

Any idea where I should start investigating?

Yes, I'd be for downloading hplip from sourceforge and using that. Far better than CUPS unless you are using it across the network.
