Hi folks,

I see you are using Ubuntu 10.10. You report that the printer has been working for over a year, yet Ubuntu 10.10 has not been released for that long. Did you recently change your operating system?

Did this problem start after you installed an upgrade or a patch?

First I would check to see if CUPS is running. Use your web browser to access the CUPS interface.
http://localhost:631/

Use that CUPS interface to check to see if the printer is defined by clicking on the Printers tab on the far right side of that web page. If it is defined then you can check its status.

If the printer is not defined you may have to install HPLIP. This software is available through the Ubuntu package management system (Synaptics).

Hi stress_junkie,

Thanks for your advice.

Ubuntu has been upgraded several times on this PC, Ubuntu 9.04 -> Ubuntu 10.04 -> Ubuntu 10.10 (now)

I made clean installation of Ubuntu 10.10.

HP Printer worked without problem since this PC was build. But it stood idle all times. I only printed once in about 2~3 weeks. I'm NOT aware whether the printing problem is caused by update/upgrade

Performed following steps:-

On web page - http://localhost:631

No printer icon on top right corner of the web page

-> Printers
Status
Filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/hpcups for printer Deskjet-5700 not available

System -> Admin -> Synaptic Package Manager
following packages installed:
hplip
libsane-hpaio
libhpmud0
hpijs
hplip-data

hplip-cups not installed.

Installed hplip-cups and rebooted PC

System -> Admin - Printing

to start "Printing - localhost"
Printer -> check Enable
login -> OK

Printer starts to print.

On web page - http://localhost:631
Still no printer icon on top right corner

-> Printers
Status
Idle - "ready to print"

HP Printer now works. Thanks

Check the firmware. Drivers these days usually need it. I had it reduced to a zero length file at some stage (fsck?) and that threw me nicely. I use foo2zjs, and never looked back. BTW I would advise against continual upgrades. There can be residual issues, which are impossible to track.

Simplest is to check is anything loaded when you plug it in.

So?

That wasn't a suggestion, it was an experience. Your problem (printer suddenly vanishing, everything seems ok) resembles the effects of a lack of firmware. If you find your printer doesn't need firmware, fine. Most do.
