printing dilemma with hpijs 1.6.1 driver

I have an apollo p 2250, which is basically a cheapo version of the HP 612C. It has both a black and color ink catridge, but the hpijs driver only recognizes the color cartridge (particularly interesting because you can actually find this driver on HP's website). There is a patch to correct this for previous versions of the driver, on linuxprinting.org (you'll have to use google or something to find it, this website won't let me post URLs because I don't have enough posts yet)

However, there doesn't seem to be a patch for the 1.6.1 driver. Does anyone know where I can find this or how I could an older patch to work with the new driver, or something to that effect?
