Partition question

Hi all folks,

I have a PC running on hardware RAID-0 (RAID pci controller). The HD is partitioned into 2, C and D. Drive-C is running Win2K and Drive-D has not been formatted yet.

How shall be the desgination of drives if to install RH9.0 on Drive-D
(how the drives will be displayed)

1) Automaticly partition
2) Manaully partition

Thanks

hi

here is a short rundown

hard disks are number alphabetically and partitions are numerically ordered

hda - first hard disk
hdb - second hard disk

hda1 - first partition on first hard disk
hda2 - second partition on first hard disk

if you setup auto partitioning.

/boot will be 100 mb
linux swap will be depending on system memory around 256 mb
the rest will be /root

manually partitioning

delete the free space in second partition

use double the amount of system memory. 128 mb is minimum for linux system

the rest can be root. i suggest seperate /home of around 200mb where you put your personal files. in case of reinstallation you wont lose data that way.hope that clearly your doubts

Hi rahulsundaram,

Thanks for your response.

I have tried to install RH9.0 on this box after having installed Win2K. It asked where shall I install RH9.0, hda or hdc. There is no hdb therefore I hesistated to proceed.

In RAID-0 the 2 drives will be regarded as an entire drive (hard disc). Win2K took up Drive-C while Drive-D is free without formatting. I don't realize what hda and hdc refer to.

hda hdb -master,slave primary
hdc, hdd - master , slave secondary.

you've got to do some special stuff to install on raid.

be careful. i don't think redhat sees your raid.

Hi whansard,

Thanks for your response.

Previoulsy I have installed RH9.0 on this PC, running quite well solely. Now I haver partitioned the drives into 2, partition-1 and partition-2 (Windows names it as Drive-C and Drive-D). Partition-1 is taken up by Win2K. I think RH9.0 detects RAID. What I don't understand is quite Win2K partition (Windows - Drive-C) does not show up on seleting "Automatically Partition". Wether I shout go to "Manaul Partition"

i'm guessing your hda and hdc are the 2 drives in
the raid configuration. i don't think you would select
either of those for an install on a raid. i haven't installed
redhat 9 though, so i don't know what the installer does.
you need someone that has installed it on a raid
configuration, but i think the partitions you would be
installing on would not be hda or hdc. they would be
a raid device. like /dev/raid0. i don't know.

Hi all folks,

May-be previously I made a mistake. RH9.0 does not recognize my RAID Controller

Test as follows;
After booting up with RH9.0 CD#1
Seleting "Manual partition"
Showing up only 2 drives, hda and hdc not as an entire drive of total capacity 80G (each HD has 40G capacity) as in Win environment. I can only choose either hda or hdc to proceed

This is an old RAID box for test purpose
RAID controller
Z-Cyber Speedway 133 + RAID

During booting the motherboard detects the RAID controller

Win98 and Win2K have been running on this box without problem. Before I also have installed only RH9.0 on it. It ran without problem but I did not recognize whether the RAID controller has been detected. I chose "Automatically partition" Sorry I could not recall exactly.

Kindly advise how to make the RAID controller detected by RH9.0. I have its floppy for installing Win driver but not Linux

Any suggestion? Thanks in advance.
