Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

overclock intel i7 960 sabertooth x58 motherboard

Hi all,
I'm trying to overclock an intel i7 960 on a sabertooth x58 motherboard. My case is a cool master 690 II advanced. I don't have any other cooling systems besides the fans on the case. I was looking for advice on what a safe speed to overclock to would be, and how i would go about doing it. Thank you in advance for any help and advice on this.

If you are using the stock Intel CPU-cooler I wouldn't overclock at all. Go and get yourself a good aftermarket cooler. Also, there is no such thing like a guaranteed safe speed, it depends highly on your setup and the particular CPU you have. Not all CPUs overclock the same.
I would strongly recommend to research the topic of overclocking Intel Core i7 for socket 1366 first, otherwise you will most likely get issues. They can range from simple malfunctioning to fried hardware. If you don't want to risk that, don't do it. Also keep in mind that the i7 series already overclocks itself if the current temperature and the TDP allow that, and that you void your warranty with overclocking manually.

In short, overclocking should only be done by people who know what they are doing, understand all the risks and implications, know how to test an overclocked system for stability and are not in fear of letting their hardware die. Even the most experienced overclockers will eventually fry a peace of hardware.

Not yet I havent. *knock on wood* *knocks head* Well, OK, there was that celeron I cooked a few years back, but I knew that was going to blow. When you've gto access to piles of CPUs and are bored at work, blowing the odd CPU can be fun.

Good advice. More cautious than I would be, though.

I wouldnt call turboboost 'overclocking' but I can see where you are coming from.
