Optical mouse troubles

I bought a a Jasco (branded as GE) optical mouse a while ago. It has a really annoying problem: It doesn't respond to slow movements. If I move it slow enough, I can bring it from one side of my desk to the other without the cursor even moving one pixel. Once I move it fast enough, then then the cursor starts moving. However, if I boot into (Ugh!) Windows 98, it doesn't have this problem. My previous mouse worked find under Linux, too.

Does anyone know how I might be able to get it to work better?

It may be worth knowing that I have XFree86 set to 2x acceleration, with no threshold. My system has Mandrake 9.1 with XFree86 4.3.0 and KDE 3.1.3.

Thanks,
Dravis.

What kind of mousepad do you have? I tend to avoid plastic mousepads, or mousepads that otherwise have slick, shiny, mirror-like surfaces, and prefer mousepads with a cloth surface with a distinctive pattern on it, such as mine that is blue with a picture of beads of water.

Shiny mousepads tend to confuse the image processor on an optical mouse, making it more difficult to register movements correctly.

I am using a simple piece of paper. That can't be the problem, though. It works fine on Windows, with the same pice of paper.
