Troubles with SATA Optical

Hello There,

First off I am a noob to linux and am actually not up and running yet. I am still in the research phase. So please take that into account.

I am going to be running Gentoo from a stage 1 install. I am having trouble finding some information on the net about SATA optical drives under linux.

I am using a Plextor 716SA Serial- ATA DVD-RW on a asus a8v Deluxe Mobo with a AMD Athlon 64 3200+ using the Via raid controller (VT8237 Chipset) on the southbridge. It supports my Plextor Drive listed above with no issues.

I am currently running Win Xp SP2 with no issues other then it being windows. My question is does linux offer support for Sata Optical drives...

more specificily does it offer support for my setup. I was just wanting to get some advanced knowledge on what to expect. I am also using a Western Digital Raptor 10,000 RPM S-ATA drive on the same controller. I have heard some horror stories about having to use a IDE drive to install linux on cause it won't find these drives... but that is why I am asking for myself.

Thanks in advance for any information provided.

You shouldn't have a problem. I'm running Gentoo on my machines which are all running SATA disks.

The DVDRW though, that's SATA? I didn't think they were available (yet).

Yeah the Plextor DVD-RW is sata I got it from newegg a while back cost me 120 bucks but works really well. So you are using Gentoo with Sata drives and they work ok? what kind of controller are you using for the Sata?

Furthermore what kind of drive do you have... just for courious ness?
