Onboard Video + XServer Problem

I'm using Slackware 9.1 with kernal version 2.4.22. I'm having a problem with X Server. In Slackware, when I use "XF86Setup" (Or is it XFree86Setup?), it automatically sets my resolution at 640 x 480, and I'm able to do startx and work in KDE, but the resolution is 640 x 480. If, in the console, I run XF86Config, and set everything to the right values (although I'm not completely sure about how much memory the onboard video card has; I specified 32 mb, as that's what the salesman said it was and I can't find any information in my mobo user manual), when I try to do startx all I get is a black, blank screen. I figured there was something wrong with my XF86Config file, so I was going to boot into Knoppix to copy its XF86Config file, since I've had a good experience with how Knoppix sets up XServer on my old computer. But when I try to boot Knoppix, after it finishes booting everything in the console and trying to start XServer, I just get a blank, black screen as well. I'm not sure what to do.

I'm using a KM2M Combo Series MSI mainboard with a VIA KM266 Chipset. The board has an integrated Savage 8 2D/3D Graphic controller, which I use.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just guessing here, but are you using an LCD screen? If so the right knoppix cheat code/boot parameter might help (www.knoppix.net/docs). I only set up an LCD system with knoppix once, but had to add something like 'fb1280x1024' as a boot parameter to get the display to work.

Okay... I'm starting to think the video card just isn't supported by Linux... So I guess I'll get an AGP card. What should I get? I want moderate performance, enough to play Counterstrike comfortably.

The definitive list of drivers at:

http://www.xfree86.org/current/Status29.html#29

seems to agree. Sorry I can't advise on a replacement, but there plenty of discussion in this forum (esp. pro and anti-NVidia).

Don't see a "Savage8" listed anywhere there. There's "Savage4", but no "Savage8". :-\ oh well. Thanks for your help.
