Off from offboard card: lilo config
hello
I have a gigabyte GA-6VTXDR-C motherboard which has 4 ide channels. 2 regular ones (which I think at ata 66, but I need confirmation) and 2 ata 100 raid channels.
My hard drives are in the two raid ones (ide 3 and 4). As a result, they are marked as being devices hde and hdg (because ide1=hda & hdb; ide2=hdc & hde) .
Lilo should be able to boot from these controllers, should it not? I have set the bios is boot from ide3 first, but each time I boot up I get a boot manager error saying that no media is found.
Questions:
1. Would this error occur is the kernel did not have the correct ide controller built into the kernel, or would that not matter at all.
2. is this a lilo problem, or a bios setting? Could anyone clarify how a bios boot manager works: does it check onboard AND offboard ide channels when it loads (i believe that these two raid channels count as offboard)
3. would it help if I managed to set hde as hda (I believe that lilo has an "append="ide=reverse"" line in it to reverse the ide channels.
Can someone give me some suggestions.
thanks in advance
hamish
