Nvidia resolution problem FC6

Hello
I am having a problem where i can only use 640x480 resolution after installing the Nvidia driver on FC6 for my Geforce 5600.

i firstly installed the livna package then installed kmod-nvidia by typing

yum install kmod-nvidia

everything seemed to download and install fine and i verified that the driver was working by typing

glxinfo | grep direct . it tells me 'direct rendering - yes'

so the driver is working properly as far as i can see.

i just cant change to a resolution higher than 640x480..

any suggestions?

im thinking there are things that are needed to be added to my config, but im not sure where to start with this.

cheers.

If you have not yet reboot after you have installed nVidia's modules (drivers), do the following.

1) Save any work and log out
2) Hit CTL+ALT+F1
3) Log in as root
4) type init 3 or telinit 3 to change the runlevel to 3
5) Use modprobe -r to remove any modules for video such as fb or nvfb or rivafb or nvidiafb
6) Type "modprobe -v nvidia". It should give you information that is loaded. If comes to an error, then you need to remove more modules.
7) Change Driver in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to nvidia
8) Type init 5 or telinit 5 to load up the GUI.
9) Go back to tty1 by hitting CTL+ALT+F1
10) Use the utility gtf to help you create modeline for desire resolution and refresh rate.
11) If gpm, mouse utility to copy and paste text within the console, is used, highlight the text and paste in /etc/X11/xorg.conf in the monitor section
12) Add the list of resolutions to modes in the Screen section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

On some setups, changing the driver to nvidia in /etc/X11/xorg.conf can make the screen blank when X Window System is re-loaded after the change. This is ok, so use the utility gtf to create modelines.

TIP: Hit CTL+ALT+BKSPC to reset X Window System. Also doing this way will force it to read the new changes of /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I recommend doing this command only after you save your work and logged out.

isn't the package meant to edit the xorg.conf file accordingly?

The utility that automatically changes it for you have to run it afterwards. Though I do not recommend running it because it will screw up /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

It best to do it yourself to get some experience editing text files with vim or vi. You can use nano, pico, or other text editor that runs under the console, but vim is lightweight and it is usually installed.
