FC6 livna-nvidia-legacy problem
Hello, I have just upgraded from FC5 to FC6 and used yum to install the livna-nvidia-legacy driver. When attempting to run an Open Dynamics Engine test it fails with message "Xlib: extension 'GLX' missing...".
Is there something wrong with the 7184 vnidia legacy package?
Some quick background. I have ensured that the FC5-FC6 upgrade installed the i686 kernel. I used 'yum install kmod-nvidia-legacy' which installed the 2.6.18-2689 kernel, livna-nvidia-legacy-1.0.7184...fc6.i686.rpm, and xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-legacy-1.0.7184-2.lvn6.i386.rpm. It all installed without error. The xorg.conf file has "glx" in the modules section. I can disable using 'nvidia-config-display disable' and run the ODE test OK, but rather slowly.
I have done an exhaustive check of the contents of the two rpms (above) against what has been installed on disk and the only file that is in the rpms that hasn't been installed is /usr/share/applications/livna-nvidia-settings.desktop'. I'm not sure if this is significant.
glxinfo can't be found, and System Tools>Display Settings>OpenGL/GLX information reports"The OpenGL extension 'GLX' is not supported by the X server or there was a problem retrieving GLX information from the X server".
I have tried all I can think of, including uninstalling and reinstalling the packackes 3 times!
Can someone please help?
Cheers.

One question raised by your post is "what graphics adapter do you have?". Do you really need the legacy driver instead of the latest one?
Browsing http://fedoraforum.org might give a clue. And, of course, for things that should just work, but don't, there is: http://bugzilla.livna.org

My graphics adaptor is the Nvidia RIVA TNT2, which is only supported by the legacy packages.

I also had problems with that particular k-mod with nvidia geforce 6800, I have an Intel 915 chip-set to which there is a package at Fedora extras for the 915 chip-set but I belive this package has helped people with newer chipsets also, but it is not written in stone. The k-mod limited my resolution to 800 x 600 mpx. and that is what the 915 package addresses, although I have yet to implement the two together (k-mod & 915) as my problems with this card (not booting into graphical mode once and a while) disappeared in a couple days after a fresh install or a certain number of re-boots, and it seems to be a little slow in opening new windows (slight hesitation) compared to my older 32 bit Mandrake, it does'nt seem to bother me much as I don't really require optimum graphics performance as of yet. Maybe soon I'll try them together.

I did, you're talking about the script one:
NVIDIA-Linux-ia64-1_0-5336-pkg1_run (I have 64 bit)
Although I did'nt seek specific instructions for that one, I used the same route as the 32 bit one in my Mandrake, instructions I got from mandrakelinuxtips4free web site. Logged out of session, log into terminal mode, telinit 3 to turn off X. That's where everything went haywire with this Fedora, It appeared as though I was in non-graphical mode terminal but got nothing but errors when issued command #sh NVIDIA-Linux-ia64-1_0-5336-pkg_run . Then tried telinit 5 to no avail, had to hit Ctrl. Alt. Del. to re-boot

I was talking to the OP, doesn't matter though. Typically it is installed through runlevel 3, which you already mentioned, but instead of falling back to 3, just boot with 3, install and then reboot to 5. Not sure if it will work. Do these errors refer to some sources not being available?

I hit any key to go to list of bootable devices, typed (a) and got this:
grub append> ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
I put a (3) at the end of quiet without a space and it appeared to boot in runlevel 3 but just before one would expect a prompt, it re-started the boot process in graphical mode.
I put a (3) at the end of quiet after a space (quiet 3) and it did the same but this time did not re-boot in graphical mode and gave me the prompt, logged in as root and gave command as follows (output included):
[root@localhost ~]#sh NVIDIA-Linux-ia64-1_0-5336-pkg1_run
:command not found_0-5336-pkg1_run: line 18:
:command not found_0-5336-pkg1_run: line 23:
:command not found_0-5336-pkg1_run: line 31:
:command not found_0-5336-pkg1_run: line 33:
NVIDIA-Linux-ia64-1_0-5336-pkg1_run: line 459: syntax error near enexpected toke
, 'do
NVIDIA-Linux-ia64-1_0-5336-pkg1_run: line 459: ' for a in $GUESS_MD5_PATH
,do
[root@localhost ~]#
This is the second package I downloaded (12mb), both did the same thing. Looks like a md5 problem at the end.
Same results as when I would fall back into runlevel 3 from graphical mode

Funny how they have what appears to be full instructions on that page but don't mention anything about having to be in runlevel 3?
I'm on dial-up, wil post results of new script tommorow. Hopefully.

For the Nvidia legacy drivers, you need to do the following for FC6. In the "Device" section of xorg.conf add:
Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true"
Then you won't get the "GLX missing" error anymore.
