I have a PCI G-Force 5200 card which is in the pc and I can see the desktop.
But I think linux is still using some settings from the onboard GFX that I am unable to disable. When I probe Videocard it only finds the onboad chip and not the PCI card.
My motherboard has a onboard GFX chip which I was using when I installed RH. This was working ok but only had 8meg or memory.
I have now got a G-Force FX 5200 PCI (no AGP on the mobo) and have installed the Nvidia drivers, but RH does not find the PCI Card.
The Mobo is quite old and does not have the option to disable the onboard.
So what happens is when I try and do something that needs the extra memory the whole PC locks up and I have to pull the power.
I have edited the XF86config file but the system still thinks its the onboard I am trying to use.
Is there a way to manually set the pci card rather than letting RH find it????
I have also set the No AGP setting on the Nvidia card just in case but that made no difference. I am using the New card so it is being found its just not showing up in the redhat system.
I have an nvidia 5200 fx card and the redhat installer (distro 9) cant see it on install, so puts in a standard vesa driver, then on first boot reads the card frequencies so low the monitor can't track down (20.5 Hz by 25 Hz) to it and throws an error. Then, if I boot to init 3 I have no password recognition at login. Wierd or what???? Upshot is, no display, any ideas?
I can use the card within reason but as far as redhat is concerned it still thinks I'm using the onboard GFX chip. Probe Videocard does not find it and when I boot up the checking for new hardware does not find it and yet the monitor is plugged into it and working.
That's the point. It can't. What I meant by my post was, is it possible that it is NOT using your nvidia card but simply looking thru the Nvidia drivers to the onboard chip? Is your display functionality improved since installing Nvidia, or the same as before?
Have you had a good poke around in the bios?
Normally thats where you set the primary display device, there may also be a bios update available that gives you an option to disable the on board graphics.
OTOH, you may just have a badly designed motherboard, or one that was designed for only one purpose........running windoze for a receptionist.....
Since I have put the Nvidia Card in the quality of the screen is better. I have no flicker now on my screen.
So I am assuming that the card is working but the fact that when ever I open any browsers and try to look at a site that is very heavy on graphics the whole pc locks up and I have to pull the plug.
So I think that even though its trying to use the PCI card its trying to use memory settings from the onboard GFX.
I have just taken the Nvidia card out and probed and booted with the onboard only and it all works fine again.
I am pretty sure that its because RH is not detecting the PCI card properly, but am banging my head on my desk as to what I need to do now.
its starting to get to me.....i think I'm starting to get a twitch.....
Aussie thanks for that helpful addition to my thread
You are also correct though. The Bios has no option to change the init display and no option to disable the onboard. I was sort of hoping that it would just install both and then RH would let me choose which I want to use.
As I said in the entry above. It is using the PCI card but for some reason RH is still not actually finding it properly. I would have thought the Probe Videocard would find the PCI and the Onboard.
