Nvidia Drivers fail after install of transcode

Hi all, I have installed transcode and dvdrip and their respective dependencies (a total of 118 packages in my case). I am running SM3.4-3 and after installing the above packages my system seems to have undergone a huge update: to begin with X, it was gone after the first reboot. Loaded the Live-cd x configuration and I have X back, only running the "nv" driver not "nvidia". when I install nvidia drivers through 'os-center' from hd install I have no X after reboot again. when I run the nvidia installer without running X it comes up with several errors, all kernel related ("no precompiled kernel interface" is the last one). I have installed everything I could find in the repositories for my kernel (2.6.15-1-586tsc) header, image, source and whatever else i could find with "2.6.15-1-586tsc" in it but no luck with nvidia installer. This is not the only thing that has changed; all fonts have changed, the login manager has changed too, KDE has become version 3.5, openoffice was updated in the process, I think Xfree86 has been replaced with xorg11, and who knows whatever else has happened on my system. can anyone tell me what I did to my system? and may be even how to fix it? I have done this whole thing 2 times an both times the exact same thing has happened, first installed SM3.4-3 with nvidia drivers, then installed these 2 programs with their respective dependencies. I need professional help.

Ron.

You also neeed to Post what distribution you have ..
Er OK I figured it Out.. apparently SM3.4-3 is some sort of Code for Simply Mepis which is really what you should have stated..

what nvidia card would help also

And don't forget to post the Error that X is getting when it tries to start..
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
or tail /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Ok, I will post the log file below. And yes it is SimplyMepis 3.4-3 final that I am running although because of all the updates it did I am not so sure anymore how much of the initial distro is left. the log is very long, in order to get it posted I needed to chop it in two.

thanks in advance,

Ron.

It looks like I made this thread very wide. And the video card is an Asus Nvidia V7100pro 64mb.
I am sure you are not going through every line, but I wasn't sure which sections you would want to see.

thanks again,
Ron.

The only error I see (EE) in the log file is this one...

Quote:
(II) LoadModule: "GLcore"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libGLcore.so
dlopen: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libGLcore.so: undefined symbol: __glXLastContext
(EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libGLcore.so
(II) UnloadModule: "GLcore"
(EE) Failed to load module "GLcore" (loader failed, 7)
And the nvidia README plainly states that you should remove lines referring to GLCore from your X configuration...

Code:
Remove the line:
      Driver "nv"
  (or Driver "vesa")
  (or Driver "fbdev")

and replace it with the line:

    Driver "nvidia"

Remove the following lines:

    Load "dri"
    Load "GLCore"

In the Module section of the file, add the line (if it does not already exist):

    Load "glx"
You need to check and make sure your xorg.conf file is correct..

Thanks farslayer, I have tried the above but as I have problems installing the nvidia drivers because
of a missing kernel header or source (something I can't find through the repository, but required for proper
driver install) the installer will not finish and ends with an error ("no precompiled kernel interface")
X does not start, same thing as before. I think I need to get the required files by the nvidia installer, but
I can't seem to find them. another thing that I noticed is that the kernel is 2.6.15-1-586tsc but the 4th line
from the top of the log file says: "Build Operating System:Linux 2.6.12-1-686 i686", do you think it might
be worth a try installing all of this kernel? I think the required files for nvidia might all be there in the
repository. I am not sure what will happen if I would do this.

thanks again, I appreciate you sharing your knowledge

Ron

Well SimplyMepis is debian based.. you could give the Debian method of installing
the nVidia drivers a shot, it should work just fine...
You are correct the nvidia kernel module needs to be compiled against the version
of the kernel you are currently running if the versions do not match it will not work.

Of course according to your Logs you are using the nv driver which is the open source Driver
for the nVidia cards. you are not currently using the Proprietary nVidia drivers.

For your sources list the main repositories should be fine but you need to
add in contrib and non-free if they are not there..
Code:
deb http://apt.dotmepis.org/mepis/ stable main contrib non-free
In Debian gdm will automatically restart X so you need to shutdown GDM first..
(or xdm or kdm whatever the case may be.. )
I prefer the Debian way of installing the nVidia drivers using the Module assistant.. .
su -
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
apt-get update
apt-get install module-assistant nvidia-kernel-common
m-a prepare
m-a a-i nvidia

apt-get install nvidia-glx

Edit your xfree86.conf according to nVidias specifications.
Backup the file first
cp -p /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak

Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf: use vim, pico, or nano whatever editor you are familiar with..

* In the "Module" section, be sure that you have a line

Load "glx"

and remove or comment out any lines that refer to the "dri" or "GLCore" modules.

* In the "Device" section for your video card, Change the Driver "nv" line to:

Driver "nvidia"

/etc/init.d/gdm start to restart your X server
You should see the nVidia logo flash on the screen as X starts to tell you that your Drivers are working..

I am working on it. Trying to get the sources list to get contrib and non-free in. The link you sent, does not
work. I did this:
su -
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
apt-get update
apt-get install module-assistant nvidia-kernel-common
m-a prepare
m-a a-i nvidia

but when I do the last line I get a return that may be I should add contrib and non-free to sources.list. I see
contrib and non-free appear everywhere in my sources.list. I will do some more efforts tomorrow.
Now i am ready for bed.

Should be as simple as adding them to the Existing soource lines..

Just edit your sources list and add contrib non-free to the lines in your source list just like my example above..
then make sure you do an apt-get update in order to populate the list.

If you are still confused you can post your source list and I will show you what exactly to add..

cat /etc/apt/sources.list

i have given that idea of you a try; installed kubuntu 6.06 on different partition(hda6)
which, unlike mepis 6.0, does work on this particular system and as i type this it is
doing all sorts of ubuntu related updates. I installed automatix2 as per their website
and i will see in the morning what happened to it. i have copied my sources list here from my
whatever-there-is-left-of-it mepis 3.4 (hda7)install. there are many lines there that i once
tried to see what they have and if they work as it is hard to get the right repositories i find
it hard to throw them out. some just don't work and should most likely be removed. I just
don't understand how m-a a-i nvidia returns that i should add non-free and contrib to my
sources list while they are everywhere. unless i made some typo's, but i usually copy and paste

thanks again, you are a real help.
it will still take some time before i get to see how it all works and that i can do some advising
and helping myself. although i do promote linux under my friends and others that cross my path.

catch you next time.
ron.

I have installed all the software i wanted and also the nvidia drivers under kubuntu with automatix2,
piece of cake I might add. still mepis is my favourite but i guess it really doesn't matter so much between
the two as they both use a lot of the same repositories. unfortunately i can't run mepis 6.0 on my system.
i will continue to try and get it to work under mepis aswell, i mean after all this hard work i am not going to
give it up so easy. it is always better to know 'the debian way', that way i get to understand the os better
and will i be better at troubleshooting it. thanks again, i am still curious to what you can say about my
(messy) sources list from mepis.

The source list for Mepis is a bit odd,.. you really shouldn't configure a debian based distro to pull files from Stable, Testing and Unstable on the same system unless you are using apt-pinning and really know what you are doing. mixing repositories can seriously break things.

If those were the default settings in that source.list that is very very odd....

Well you see it is certainly not a default sources list and I have learned this way
that sources can make or break a system, I notice now with ubuntu that dvdrip is version
0.52 where i have 0.98 on my upgraded mepis debian where the nvidia drivers don't
work anymore. transcode is the same version in both. in ubuntu I miss this utility
called 'kwikdisk' and it is not in the ubuntu repos. still overall i think for now with
ubuntu i have made progress and i will use this for a while now.

thanks for all your help

kwikdisk is part of kdf.. check if you can install kdf.
