Mandrake 10.0/AMD 64/Nvidia drivers fail

Ok, I am running Mandy 10 on my PC and have installed the Nvidia drivers just fine (I run a 32-bit AMD 2700+).

No here's the problem, using the same install CDs for Mandrake 10 on my girlfriend's AMD Athlon 64 3400 it runs just fine with everything else. Then I have the problem of installing the Nvidia drivers. When it goes to compile the kernel, it says "done" in green letters and then it just hangs. Never goes any further.

I am assuming the Nvidia 64-bit drivers are for 64-bit linux...i don't want to try those and mess up her kernel. So any help would be appreciated! I am not at her house right now, so I can't post the logs, but as far as the install log, everything works fine until it hangs at the end of kernel compile.

Maybe this will help generate some help...she said that she loves linux and can live without it if i can get GTA:VC on there. Well, i have a license for WineX and Vice City...I just need the nvidia driver to work. Otherwise it's back to windows. (She'd rather not have a dual boot)

you installed mandrake 10.0 *32-bit* on a 64bit platform, and used what driver? The Linux IA32, Linux IA64 (i believe this is intel), or Linux AMD64 driver?

It's really strange to me.. if you had the money for a 64-bit system, why not also buy a 64-bit linux distro as well (i know mandrake's is a little expensive..., but there's also suse..)? That would make sense.. no offense or anything. Plus this problem *might* not have shown up. But... i could be wrong.

well, the deal was, I had the free mandrake, told her that I would put it on there and said if she liked it, we'll get the 64-bit edition. No sense in buying a 64-bit linux if she is going to opt with windows, right? (Seeing as I have a 32-bit system)

But I tried installing the 32bit driver.

i've looked around on some of the other distribution forums, and people have also been having trouble installing nVidia drivers..

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=115039

and

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=113254

might be helpful. The second link is specifically for the nVidia driver (whereas the first is just a Fedora-problems section). Have a look at mishmash's post (second link). I really hope this was helpful...

*edit*
MAYBE you used a driver that didn't work for the 2.6 kernel?

Well, I'm a _total_ to linux, but I just built an AMD 64 box. When I tried loading Mandrake Linux 9.2 on it, I didn't get anywhere.

There's a whole different distro for AMD 64, not just different drivers and such. I guess the whole thing is called "Mandrake Linux 10.0 Official for AMD 64". When I ran THAT install it went flawlessly and I'm writing this using one of the built in browsers and am pretty damn psyched!

I set my box up as dual-boot w/ Win XP. I did this mostly because I was getting bored waiting for Mandrake get their s*** together and give me back the $12k they charged me for my Powerpack and _then_ to send me the correct version. Anyhow... With XP I had a couple conflicts during its installation. Mandrake10 install went flawlessly.

I am still not sure if I should use the update AMD56 NForce platform driver off nVidia's site. It does say it's built for 2.4 Kernels, and isn't Mandrake 10.0 built on the 2.6 kernal? (Again, I'm about as ignorant of Linux as the come but I think I heard something to that effect).

Anyone tried those 64 bit nForce platform drivers w/ AMD 64 Mandrake 10 ??
