not detecting sound card

When I start up KDE it says my sound card was not detected and when I do a dmesg in a shell I see these lines:

Code:
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.4rc2 (Tue Mar 30 08:19:30 2004 UTC).
ALSA device list:
  No soundcards found.
I enabled sound support in my kernel. According to my motherboard specs (I have an ASUS K8V Deluxe) it says I have ADI AD1980, 6-channel CODEC. I can't find anything about that card in the menu config or ALSA's soundcard matrix.

I'm using Gentoo.

What should I do?

Thanks.

Gentoo may require manual configuration of alsa -- it used to at least.
edit /etc/modules.d/alsa to include the needed module, and then run update-modules

However, I can not tell you which module you may need. Please provide either an lspci dump, or for faster response you should go to #gentoo on irc. They can walk you through this interactively

you need to modprobe the module your sound card uses. You have to have compiled the relevant sound driver as a module. In order to find out which module to build, find out the *chipset* for your sound card.
