I had a problem with a fresh install of 10.04 to a modern sony laptop (F11C5E). The solution for me was:
sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.31-20-generic and reboot / restart sound.
You'll need to fine-tune the above so it matches your running kernel.

Why? What is your error message?
Note I've edited the above post because it should be linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.31-20-generic

I told you before, the package is named linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.32-22-generic
And it is right there in the ubuntu repositories.

Please post your /etc/apt/sources.list file
