Unhappy no sound in earphones

I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10 in a dual boot with 2 HDD, the first has Win 7, the 2nd Ubuntu OS. I only use earphones and they work with Win 7 but not with 11.10.
I tried the System Settings>Sound>Hardware -- but
no earphones are displayed. none of the options:
Off,...,analog stereo output , etc produce any sound, the volume is turned to Max, but running the test (speakers) give no sound. I tried alsamixer the earphones are greyed out also tried the Sound Troubleshooting Procedures show the Driver, Library, & Utilities correctly
The results (partial) of the following commands were:
cat /proc/asound/modules
0 snd_hda_intel

cat /proc/asound/cards:
0[Intel ]: HDA-Intel- HDAIntel
HDA Intelat 0xfdff8000 irq 43

The soundcard is recognized as HDA Intel. What else can I do?
I'll appreciate ur help

You may need to supply a model option to the snd-hda-intel kernel module. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto

Thank u I looked at the url but it refers to older distros.

I logged a bug with UbuntuWiki thru Launch Pad
after running a test (still no sound) and collecting the data
