Sound from Speaker Does not get cut off when earphones are plugged in

I new to linux. I have an Acer 2920 and have installed Fedora 9 on it. The sound is working ok, however, when I plug in the earphones the sound to the laptop speakers does not get cut off. How do i correct this?
p.s. I have always been a windows user and have no experience with linux!

Did it do this under Windows, too? I'm thinking that this has nothing to do with the operating system, but with the actual audio component wiring.

I have a 5.1 surround sound system for my desktop, and the sound doesn't cancel when you plug headphone in, either. But the sound will still work through the headphones if you turn the speakers off.
