Question NO SCREENS FOUND while starting XFree86 with S3 vid card

OK I got linux squared away on this PC as a dual boot, but now I'm back to converting my old PC.

It's an old PC and it's got an older video card. When I put the card in I remember reading S3 on it, but not much else. When installing XFree86 I was asked to select a driver or something for my video card. Seeing the "S3 Virge" option I selected that as my driver and continued setup...

So now when I boot up and try and go into X it says something along the lines of:

Fatal Errors:
No screen found

Well, something ain't right because my monitor and video card work fine in windows, and I know the monitor is hooked up right cause I'm reading the text off it.

What can I do to correct this? Optimum video quality is definitely not a priority as of now. I'm just trying to get it setup in a basic sense and start learning linux.

Thanks,
Garrett

Try running xf86config. Then go to your /etc/X11 and see if there is a xf86config-4. If there isn't just startx if there is move it to a different directory and try starting x

ok I removed xf86config-4 while setting my xf86config to VGA modes/rates... Now the monitor clicks on and I have another problem and it clicks out!

It can't find my mouse. My mouse is connected via serial port 1 (COM 1?) on the back and is a standard 2 pointer mouse. What do I have to enter as the device location when configuring?

Thanks,
garrett
