Question No longer able to mount CD: "/dev/hdc does not exist"

I am no longer able to mount my CD/DVD drive on my laptop running Ubuntu. If I try to mount the drive in Nautilus, it returns this error message:

Code:
mount: special device /dev/hdc does not exist
/var/log/syslog contains some error messages:

Code:
localhost kernel: [4900769.203000] hdc: status error: status=0x00 { }
localhost kernel: [4900769.203000] ide: failed opcode was: unknown
This was repeated many times, interspersed with this:

Code:
localhost kernel: [4890905.084000] hdc: ATAPI reset complete
Any hope for this drive?

Hmmm is it possible that you DVD died/is dying? My guess would be to try it on another computer to verify.
Have you made change to your computer lately? I mean, adding an hardware, or moving the dvd? Maybe the plug is loose? I would check the cable connection first if i was you.

The unit is slimline drive that slides into the side of the laptop. No cable to speak of; just a kind of slot. As far as I can tell it is properly seated.

Alas, I only have one laptop; can't test the drive on another.
