Special device /dev/hdc does not exist

Hi!

Debian Etch isn't too keen on finding my CD/DVD-drive.

My fstab:

Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/sda2 /media/windows ntfs nls=utf8,umask=0222 0 0
/dev/sda5 / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
/dev/sda6 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/hdc /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 ro,user,noauto 0 0
Problem is, there is no /dev/hdc file!
I found instructions elsewhere on the forum on how to create it, but that didn't work ("not a block device")

What do I do?

It's quite strange you don't have /dev/hdc....Check if you have /dev/cdrom instead

Been there, done that - in fact,
"ls /dev/ | grep cd" returns ptycd and ttycd as the only devices resembling the search pattern.

By the way, here's my dmesg output:

EDIT: I've been trying to do a MAKEDEV -v hdc to no avail - which makes me wonder if all the correct modules have been loaded. During the installation, I was initally forced to deselect loading the ata_piix module - could that have anything to do with my problem?

Cool

SOLVED!

First I found out how to have my CD/DVD-drive recognized in the first place, the solution available here http://kerneltrap.org/node/3971 and here:

Quote:
Bug with ata_piix module prevent loading ide driver. You have to rebuild initrd image. Just add following to /etc/mkinitrd/modules:
ide-generic
ata_piix
sd_mod

Backup your old initrd:
cp /boot/initrd.img.2.6.8-1-686 /boot/initrd.img.2.6.8-1-686.bak

Make new initrd image:
mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd.img.2.6.8-1-686

Reboot
In case of failure boot from old image - grub way:
initrd /boot/initrd.img.2.6.8-1-686.bak

Wait for fix in ata_piix

Best regards

Now my drive was properly detected as revealed by a 'dmesg | grep hdc'
- but I still needed to create a device file in /dev/ to access it.

MAKEDEV wouldn't play along, so I downloaded the kernel documentation and found the so-called major and minor numbers in the devices.txt, as these numbers are required by mknod.
Then I just had to type as root: 'mknod hdc b 22 0' and voilá! A quick mount, and it's working!
