Arrow No Audio at all (Suse 10.0)

hi,
i've got SUSE 10.0 OSS-GM Linux and can't figure out how to have the sound back
Audio never worked before i set up the audio card after renaming the etc/modprob.d 'sound' file to 'sound.old'

it worked pretty well, system sound when logging in, mp3, dvds and so on

i unfortunately had to boot back on XP to check something and since that it does not work anymore
i just had tried an ubuntu 5.10 live cd before that.
i doubt this can impede audio in any way but can't figure out what changed or can stop output.

what's wrong ? :
alsamixer : load failed
kmix : only 1 tab : output, the other ones disapeared : input, switches
yast/hardware/sound/ other/ volume has no channels available , even after setting up the card
no sound can be heard at all.
PC Pentium 4 3.4 GB 1024 RAM
audio card : 82801FB/FBM/FR/FRW ICH6 Family High def audio controller
driver : snd-hda-intel
kernel : uname -r command line gives me 2.6.13-15.8-smp
i can't figure out what to do about alsa drivers (if needed?)
-assuming that kernel is not able to manage the alsa drivers or sthg (??)-

>>So : how can i enable back audio ?
then Store it before a reboot cancels evrything ?

i havent ever seen such a death of suse audio before, it sounds like the drivers for whatever you card is have died and need to be rebuilt or reloaded. i had a similar issue and found i had to do a wipe, suse is nice but when it comes to rebuilding suse, it isnt freindly.

good luck

Looking at your post I'm guessing you already tried this, but just incase.

Have you tried ;
'alsaconf' to configure, followed by
'alsamixer' to set the levels, followed by
'alsactl store' to save the settings?

Probably being silly here, but sometimes the easy way is overlooked.

funny enough, or strange enough But ........sound IS back (!!!)
i did nothing but clicking on an .avi film w. kafeine

it's really bad tough , worse than last time and with a strong whistle...

>>>going to yast/hardware/sound/and setting up the card stoped the whistle, and increased the sound back to normal more or less

>how can i setup the sound in alsamixer now ? i can't increase the volume in 'headphones', 'channel mode' and 'input sourceS'
> should i then apply "alsactl store"?
does restore only work if stored before?
i mean, obviously but it could have been stored automaticaly or sthg and thus be restored in case of errors.
is there a way to automatically save/store alsa?

after a boot on XP : no sound at all again :'(
renaming sound to sound.old does not work anymore
what can i do? Thanks
i've got Realtek AL C880 chipset
and alsa doc in /usr/src/linux-2.6.13-15.8/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt gives what follows :
Module snd-hda-intel
--------------------

Module for Intel HD Audio (ICH6, ICH6M, ICH7), ATI SB450,
VIA VT8251/VT8237A

model - force the model name
position_fix - Fix DMA pointer (0 = FIFO size, 1 = none, 2 = POSBUF)

Module supports up to 8 cards.

Each codec may have a model table for different configurations.
If your machine isn't listed there, the default (usually minimal)
configuration is set up. You can pass "model=<name>" option to
specify a certain model in such a case. There are different
models depending on the codec chip.

Model name Description
---------- -----------
ALC880
3stack 3-jack in back and a headphone out
3stack-digout 3-jack in back, a HP out and a SPDIF out
5stack 5-jack in back, 2-jack in front
5stack-digout 5-jack in back, 2-jack in front, a SPDIF out
6stack 6-jack in back, 2-jack in front
6stack-digout 6-jack with a SPDIF out
w810 3-jack
z71v 3-jack (HP shared SPDIF)
asus 3-jack
uniwill 3-jack
F1734 2-jack
test for testing/debugging purpose, almost all controls can be
adjusted. Appearing only when compiled with
$CONFIG_SND_DEBUG=y

Wink Have same chipset and problem

I have a MSI board with Via K8M890+VT8237A chipset
The VT8237A southbridge has no support yet for the 2.6.. kernel
I became frustrated visiting the via sites for solutions.
There is a topic on ViaArena about support going on for
about 2 years. Several times there was a promise saying "SOON"
but until now nothing
May be you want to go through patching the via82cxxx module.
I even did not get Suse 10.1 installed without insmod=ide-generic
so there's no enabling DMA possible
I have NO sound

Solution: I change the board at the shop for one with NVidia
Via, in italian means road
but also Go Away when said to someone
