Hi there.

Don't think I'll be much help, but I'll offer you my sympathy, because I went through the same thing with a BT Voyager when I signed up to BT Broadband last year.

I asked everywhere (including here), I tried all the drivers and everything else that was suggested (and a few things that weren't), but I just couldn't get it working.

Apparently there are people who have got this bit of kit to work with Linux, but I was not one of them.

In the end, I gave up and bought an ASDL router instead. That was the best £90 I've spent in a long while - it was a piece of cake to set up, and Linux connected to the net first time. And as a bonus, it's got extra network ports so I can plug both my computers into it.

Seriously, I'd recommend it. You'll need a network card as well (but they're dirt cheap), but it'll free up the USB port that the Voyager is hogging, and most routers come with a firewall and other nice stuff like that, which will give you that little bit extra peace of mind. It's definitely worth while. The only thing I regret is that I'd bought the Voyager before I realised that the router was what I really needed.

Oh, and it'll probably look better on your desk than that ugly blue Voyager modem, too

My router is a Vigor 2600, but there are plenty of others on the market, and some of them come in at prices that compete with plain old ASDL modems like the voyager.

Yes - on average you'll have an easier time with ethernet - There's some reasonable priced ADSL modem/routers here:

Unhappy Same Problem - BT105 Suse 8.1 - Wont work

I have this problem also.

I have suse8.1 (proffessional !*?!!!***)

A bt broadband connection where they gave me the voyager 105 adsl usb modem.

I tried all the eciadsl stuff including all the drivers, but couldnt find one that worked even though on the website it says that synch52.bin works. I always end up with scynchronisation problems and a time out. I even tried to use the software to build my own *.bin file, but this simply shafted the drivers on win xp and i had to reinstall the bt drivers on xp again.

Has anyone managed to solve this problem, without buying another modem or a router ? Specifically on Suse8.1

Personally this is the big difference between windows & linux, windows generally works, linux often doesnt.

For now i will continue to use my xp boot, but i miss using my linux boot just because it cant handle the dumb modem from bt.

Any help would be appreciated.

AOL ADSL, Voyager 105

Hello guys,
does anyone have this working?

I have the driver from http://eciadsl.flashtux.org

eciadsl-usermode-0.10-nortek-alpha.tar.bz2

and I 'sniffed' the usernam aol sent using windows
to be a 50-character string:

aolnet/aol.dsl.XXXX.10460001001000010001GB6183.0000.prod

and then I can connect using PPP0. I get DNS and IP issued
by AOL, but then they seem to do nothing. I cannot ping or
anything. Any ideas on how to proceed?
Thanks!
Bill

Hi cockpit2001,
I should have said (I did in another thread) I have this working now.

The eciadsl driver is great, really reliable.

My problem was getting the AOL connection going. I added a small hack to
'penggy' to send a UDP packet to get the IP of the correct machine to which
to tunnel, and then I ran the normal penggy tun tunnel. And it works.

Only problem now is it cuts after about 3 hours. I auto re-start it, but the
IP changes, and things like pptp or wget are killed.

BT Voyager and Mandrake

Hi, I have Mandrake 10.1, and the BT Voyager 105. I followed the instructions to make and configure the driver, and that all worked fine.
But as I'm VERY new to Linux, I'm not sure how to set up the connection in the graphical interface so that the modem can be used.
Does the driver need tweaking also, coclpit2001?
Many thanks,
Graham

Hi ghopkins,
Er..I am not sure what point you got to. Are you looking at the eciadsl-config-tk screen? That was a bit of a black art to me; several tries required. Who is providing
your service? That would help guess answers...

Yes, I have used the graphical config screen - set all the options to what was recommended for the BT Voyager 105. My provider is BT.
I realised that I should have been running eciadsl-start, which I have since done.
I have now discovered that when running this I get a 'inappropriate ocidtl for this port', or something similar to that, and the modem hangs up.
I've no idea what this means, but from some searches it may have something to do with ppp kernel?

I'm a little lost, I think!

Thanks,
Graham

Sorry,
that means nothing to me. However, I see something in flashtux's FAQ
http://eciadsl.flashtux.org/faq.php?faq_lang=en#4.6
which might help. Did you look at that page already?

Try this I did and it works with SUSE 10 (best linux ever), only £8 from the linuxshop.co.uk, you must install gcc
