Newbie: Modem install error..

I installed my 536ep modem. make clean, make 536ep, went fine, but when I went to make install, I get

cannot remove '/dev/536ep':Operation not allowed

any Ideas on what I should do next? What is the best way of having mandrake 9.1 detect my modem and to set up my connection? I would apprecitae any help from this issue.

Were you logged in as root when you did make install?

Type su to do this. It will ask you for the password. Then do it again.
