Thanks H TEXMEX H and others for all your advice much appreciate.

I placed my order today as per below with Ubuntu Linux 9.04 preloaded and tested prior to delivery. I figured for a poultry amount I could get Linx loaded and tested which includes 12 months warranty and 30 minutes software support

I have not taken the RAID option and assume I can change this myself if I choose??

Hi NoelC,

Just wonder how your experience with this so far ? I am also looking at building a new Ubuntu PC with video editing (HD) in mind as well.

Besides, which motherboard did you finally buy ?

Backup...

Are you setting those two HDD to mirror one another (RAID 1), so that when one fails, you still have all your files, or are you going to provide yourself with some other form of backup?

Backup...

I also agree that RAID is NOT a method of backing up files. I would also argue that using a HDD is also not a method of backing up files.

Hi,

Backups are very important for any system. Especially production machines. A good admin will backup via grandfathering along with on site via alternate storage means. Even tape is better than nothing. SMD is available still today for Linux backup. CD/DVD are not necessarily my first choice but it's better than nothing. HDD is the convenient media but again not the reliable method. But to a alternate storage disk is again better than nothing. External drives can be treated as a 'SMD' but still reliability plays.

I backup through out my LAN. I don't need to grandfather but if I would need to then there are multiple services available today.

This link and others are available from 'Slackware-Links'. More than just SlackwareŽ links!
