New modem
I have an Intel 536ep internal modem, and as of yet, have been unable to dial out at all. I am running SUSE 8.2 Professional, and as far as I can see, have done everything correctly. From what I've read so far, this modem is more headache than anything else, so I am considering a replacement.
I've heard a lot of people say good things about one of the Zoom external modems, but cannot find anyone in Ottawa who sells them. I have found several places that sell the US Robotics 5686 External V92 modem, but know nothing about this modem.
I would like to know if at all possible, what is the best modem to get, in terms of usability, and configuration. (I'd like if at all possible to pretty much just take the thing out of the box, enter my ppp settings, and dial in with out having to compile drivers and take a degree in software development just to get internet access working. I'm very impressed with this version of Linux, combined with Codeweaver's crossover, but without a working modem, this OS is pretty much useless to me.
