What's the make and model of your laptop? PCMCIA cards from Linksys work well and internal cards from Intel work well. People have had success with DLink cards, Broadcom cards are supported. Give us some more info.
No mine is 802.11a/b/g, 54Mbps. may be u can attach a pci card with your laptop. I think it will be better if u contact your service centre or may be some h/w expert in this forum can help u. I recommend you to check the hcl in madwifi.org (if you're planning to use madwifi) or the ndiswrapper compatibility of the model u are planning to buy. It was a painful task for me to get the appropriate drivers. (ndiswrapper experiment was a failure in my case). To make things verse my laptop's vendor doesn't provide any driver for linux
In case of Atheros + madwifi u may refer ubuntugeeks.com, which helped me a lot.
