Question Need to find WiFi 802.11a that works with Linux

I have just loaded Ubuntu on a laptop.
I need an 802.11a wifi adapter to work with this laptop running Linux.

Does anyone have an 802.11a WiFi running? I prefer USB, but a PCMCIA card slot item could be used.

I want to find one I know works before I proceed.

Thumbs up Do you actually use the 802.11a band

Some others I know use such an item, but only use the b/g band.
Are you actually using the 5ghz 802.11a band?

Also, I have a laptop. I am not sure how a PCI card will work for me.
If you know something more, please post.

Thanks!

What's the make and model of your laptop? PCMCIA cards from Linksys work well and internal cards from Intel work well. People have had success with DLink cards, Broadcom cards are supported. Give us some more info.

No mine is 802.11a/b/g, 54Mbps. may be u can attach a pci card with your laptop. I think it will be better if u contact your service centre or may be some h/w expert in this forum can help u. I recommend you to check the hcl in madwifi.org (if you're planning to use madwifi) or the ndiswrapper compatibility of the model u are planning to buy. It was a painful task for me to get the appropriate drivers. (ndiswrapper experiment was a failure in my case). To make things verse my laptop's vendor doesn't provide any driver for linux
In case of Atheros + madwifi u may refer ubuntugeeks.com, which helped me a lot.

My Laptop

My Ubuntu laptop is an old Compaq EVO N610C.
with Hardy Heron installed.

I used a Dell 1410 A/B/G WiFi USB until it would not work with linux.

I also have a Dell Inspiron 600 laptop running XP at this time that I MAY convert to Linux in the future. It has built in WiFi.
