A round-about solution
Here's a solution. I should warn, it's a bit convoluted, and requires two programs, and three plugins.
First you need Xmms, then get the xmms-itouch plugin. You can configure this plugin to work with most multimedia keyboards. You'll have volume control, as well as use of several multimedia buttons. You also have to set your audio output plugin to use the master volume control instead of pcm.
Now, as long as you have xmms running, you have complete use of your keyboards functions.
The second, and optional step is to download gkrellm, along with the volume and xmms plugins. These are both included in the gkrellm-plugins-media package. Now you have a complete PC resource monitoring tool, a very minimal xmms skin, and volume control. If you don't want music, just hit stop. Of course, you're still running xmms, along with another program, but it's a very satisfying solution.
Hope this helps anyone else who's been puzzling over this.
