multifunction device scanner problem

I am using a CANON MP500 Multifunction (originally purchased for windoze) I have managed to install Turboprint for the printer and this is working fairly well.I have tried installing all the backends for Xsane but it will not recognise that the multifunction is also a scanner. Interestingly it will not even regcognise an old usb scanner that I tried which was also a CANON N670U which is supported by one of the backends that I Installed . anyone know what I should be doing to get a scanner to work (using freespire)
Thanks for any help you may be able to give
