Unhappy Modem Locking up

Hope someone can help!

I run Mandy 9.1 on a Sony Vaio laptop and have a Xircom 56k pmcia modem attached to ttsy2 (I think). Occassionaly the modem stops repsonding even though the pppd process is still running, in the past I have sent the laptop to sleep, which in turn switches off/on the modem. Occassionally this causes the whole machine to lockup .

Is there a way to stop and re-start the modem from the command line as the sleep method is too drastic to fix the modem?

No, I'll give it a try when it happens again, but what I was looking for was a way to replicate the pmcia stop and start that is done during shutdown and re-boot.
