modem help


if i go to best buy and buy a dial up modem will it work with linux red hat 9 and mandrake 9.1 its not for me its for my parents. what i am asking is does linux have built in drivers for (telephone line)style modems if so for brand modem

yes
but it must be a hardware modem

or in other words, NOT a winmodem (these are software modems)

check the box for linux compatibility

incase you bought a software modem already (which are cheaper btw) your probably screwed, but you can still try to figure out what to do with it.
try looking for a solution at
http://www.linmodems.org/
or at anything else google might throw at you,
but if u didn't buy your modem yet, buy a hardware modem!

An External serial modem would be a good choice.
