Memtest-86 and OpenGL problems in SuSe Linux 10.1

My desktop (SuSE Linux 10.1) freezes every time I access "Screensaver - Personal Settings" (SPS). By freeze I mean keyboard is dead (can't type anything, can't get any of its lights on or off), mouse is also dead and screen is frozen. The freeze happens by just opening the SPS from the "K" menu Personal Settings then to "Appearance and Themes" and finally to "Screensaver". Now, if "Use OpenGL Screensaver" is selected, just moving the mouse over the SPS window freezes the machine.
I notice that even though the keyboard mouse and monitor are frozen there were still disk activity (the HD activity light blinked).
I thought that might be due to defective memory module and decided to run the Memtest-86 that comes with SuSE Linux 10.1 DVD. Upon selecting the memory test on the DVD menu the machine freezes and the following screen (text between the double dashed lines) is shown:

====================================================
Memtest-86 v3.2
Athlon XP (0.13) 1995 Mhz
L1 Cache: 128 12237MB/s
L2 Cache: 256K 3896MB/s
Memory : 1024M 623MB/s
Chipset : SiS 745

76K e820-Std Off

Timout on serial console: disabled

====================================================

Note that after "Timout (sic) on serial console: disabled" message, there is a empty white line where there should be a sequence of Memtest commands.
Also note that I have SuSe Linux 9.2 installed in this machine and when running this version of SuSe, OpenGL runs OK (no problem with the screensaver).

My questions:
1. Does anyone have an idea on what the problem with Memtest-86 is?
2. Why can't this machine run OpenGL in SuSE Linux 10.1?

Below are some information on this desktop machine:

1. Memtests isn't perfect, but it might mean you have bad ram or a mobo conflict.
2. What video card are you using?(only post relevant information) In order to get OpenGL fully working you need to install its 3D driver. An onboard video card is usually not good enough. Buying a cheap nVidia card is really recommended (an FX 5200 costs about 40 Euro).
