Your link brings up a good point. In the past some motherboards would shut down or refuse to boot if they did not detect a working fan plugged to the cpu fan header. I'm not sure that this is still true, since some of the current cpus can under some circumstances run at least part of the time fanless. I know that some Intel cpus would throttle speed (or even shut down?) if they reached a set high temp limit. If you are concerned about this possibility, check to see that the heatsink fan spins up at boot, and check that the heatsink is still held firmly atop the cpu and hasn't loosened.
