GNOME 2.2 instability ?

i have redhat 9...
since i installed gnome 2.2 my X server freezes dureing Gnome startup (20% of the time)
when exiting out out Full screen OpenGL games the taskbar becomes un-responsive

and genarry, im having to re-boot, or atleast restartx the X server a few times a day,

is Redhat one of those distro's that tends not to work well with GNOME ???

and will upgrading to gnome 2.4 help ?
if so, where can i get instructions on how to do so ?
(sompile from source)

im in the process of downloading fedora core 1, some people say its alot better than redhat, but this will take atleast a month to get all 3 disks (56k connection )

anyway, i used to use iceWM.. which was perfect as far as stability goes.
