Mac G4 w/apple Internal 57k Modem - how to setup modem?

Hi

I picked up an old G4 with Gigabit ethernet, 900mhz with the apple internal 57k modem. I can not seem to find the instructions on setting it up. Used Debian Etch network install... Perhaps I am not using the right words to find it in search but I can not find the info to set-up this damn modem. I just moved to a very rural area and am waiting for my alltel modem to arrive. In the meantime I only have dial-up and want to finish setting up my testing server... thanks!

first it is a 56k modem lol. and type lspci and post it so we can see the modem then we can start from there. then do system --> preferences --->hardware and see if the distro has pre built drivers for it. if not.

Yeah, yeah, yeah... 57k, 56k... Big Deal...

I did not take the time to read what I wrote... this will be a lesson I guess, but I gotta admit in the grand scheme it did not matter as you sent me to the obvious place to see about my crappy little modem. Thank you, Drakeo

I did get to find it is a type of "winmodem" or software modem, etc before placing this question... I did not expect to find an answer, and rightly so as this kind of modem seems to be a bane on internet communication... Unfortunately some time ago, while I was away my kid destroyed 2 old US Robotics 56k external modems... they are cheap though, so I really do not care.

Anyway I decided to get an UM175 "cell phone" modem from alltel... much better for speed, etc. I use my mac mini to get access w/my linux experiment. I will ask a new question based on my experiences there... I have a lot of them. My biggest issue is apache. What the hell, how do I got clear configuration directions? WAIT! before anyone answers I am not really serious as there are too many variables to have a clear cut descriptive of the process... anyway I really need a book or something so I can start to understand more about how apache works as a LAMP. with SSL no less...

Anyhow, (yes, it is a word in the dictionary) The main reason for all of this is that I have found myself in a very small very rural town that prides itself on being resistant to change (since 1492 no less) and they whine about not having certain modern stuff. I use their words in this description... Anyhow, as I was saying before that digression, I want to try to help this community get on the internet. So I have to make a web server. Yikes. I have a little idea how it is done... but not how to configure. Oh well... I will go post this question. Have a great day Drakeo! Thanks again... katiwhompas "57k"

that old modem I believe is a old internal lucent or agre chip key word martian modem . because they used the mars chip. that driver has been put in most major distros as a add on it comes stock on puppy linux. and your altel is supported with the 2.6.27.7 kernel.
or build the martian yeap I have one on my machine

Thanks... that was fast...

I am hoping to get other people out here who have had no choice except Hugh's and Wild Blue... both are a drag if you use as much bandwidth as I do...

This info about the alltel is great, It will help us start the "Pecos Linux Users Group" I must be out of my mind to try and start this kind of thing...

As for my mac issues, well... I am going to grab an old Sun Java 2100 out of the attic and see about getting it going, Just what I need, to go from a IBM/Motarola chip to an opteron. Better yet, I have a IBM with an old Intel P3. I will use that I guess as it seems I will be better off going that direction instead of trying to create something that I have no idea on how to even start... I like the Debian way, but I really would prefer something of a distro geared to plug and play LAMP.

Heck I can dream...

Thanks for the info.
