I just bought one of these and it's not working too well... xawtv does a good job at capturing the image but every two seconds or so the image becomes scrampled for a bit...

All while this is happening, the following messages are being wrote to my system logs...

There are upwards of 30 of these messages per second...

I'm running RH 7.2 with a 2.4.9-31 kernel...

Any ideas on how I can fix this? (It's not a faulty hardware issue because the camera works fine on my windoze machine... )

Well I did a quick search on www.linux-usb.org , and it says that drivers for your camera are expermental for Linux. You can find them here:

Not sure if this will help, because it is an expermental driver.

Yeah... Those are the drivers I am using... I've heard a lot of people saying that they have been able to get this camera working. I don't think that everyone would have the exact same condition that I have and I would hope that some people actually have the camera running pretty smoothly...

Has anyone got this webcam to work smoothly?

Hi there.

I've had problems with the quickcam drivers before, though it may not actually be the same kind of problem.

The best advice I can give you is to install kernel 2.4.18, as I did when I had problems. There are some issues, supposedly, with earlier 2.4 versions.

Go to ftp.ie.kernel.org

the problem is that you got a USB camera, .
my camera, I plug it into the cable tv input in the back of my pc, run xawtv, and it is as smooth as watching normal Tv!!!
No extra pain in the arse with USB dumb drivers...just compiled the cable tv card in the kernel, since the driver already comes in it and voila!, repack it, get your ticket stab and go change your USB camera for a cable tv card,

Well here is another question for you... I recently got my hands on an OLD quickcam that plugs into the parallel port of a computer and leeches some power off the keyboard...

Will I have a harder time getting this one working or will it be easier than my USB version?

Well if the camera is supported then it might be easier to get running then the usb one since parallel port cameras have been around longer then usb ones. So they would have had more time to find and fix all the bugs.
Last time I got a camera working in linux I had to modify the source code myself to get it running. But eventually I got it working.
It's definetly always good to try the latest versions and then look around for any patches which might be related to your problems. You could always try to scan through the source code to try and find out a little bit more on where the errors are coming from. Even if you don't know how to program there are often clues written in comment lines which might get you a step closer.
