Open /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
Save it somewhere safe, because if this doesn't work out, you might lose your GUI until the original file is back in the right place.
Look for something like:
Section "Screen"
# Set your desired default color depth here (16 or 24)
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "KYRO"
Monitor "My Monitor"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "800x600"
EndSubSection
EndSection
You might have another Display SubSection for 16 instead of 24.
If DefaultDepth is 24 then do the next part to the Display SubSection with Depth 24. If DefaultDepth is 16, then do for the Depth 16 part:
Put whatever resolution you want to start-up in as the first "****x****" pair of numbers on the modes line. The display server will render the desktop in the highest resolution out of those on the modes line, so make the resolution you want the highest resolution there and the first resolution on the line. Strange and interesting things will happen if this is not the case.
Log out and restart X, or just reboot, and you should be in business
(Incidentally, if you want to zoom in temporarily, you can cycle through all the available resolutions (all of the resolutions on the 'modes' line as described above) by doing 'Ctrl-Alt-+'. I believe the + has to be the one on the numberpad, so you might not have any luck with a laptop).
Hope this helps, hit me back if it doesn't work.
