cdrecord/cdrtools homepage I found the following:

So you should be able to write DVDs just like you would CDRs.
On the CDRW issue, could you give us more information on what exactly your problem is? Hard to help if one doesn't know what the problem is.
Describe what you're trying to do and what the error messages state.
