I installed Linux Mandrake 7.2 on a Toshiba Laptop. It works good except my sound card (Cirrus Logic Crystal CS4281) and my pcmcia net card (Linksys NP100 Fast Ethernet 10/100).
Well, first off the ethernet card, is one of the more supported on the planet, so I'm kinda confused: what's listed under "lsmod" (as root).
The sound card, again supported to mars and back:
modprobe cs4281
Then go to whatever GUI window manager you use, look under multimedia, find the sound mixer and if you have settings to fiddle with, you've at least got the driver loaded.
/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/cs4281.o: init_module: Device or resource busy
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters
/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/cs4281.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/cs4281.o failed
/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/cs4281.o: insmod cs4281 failed
And now on top of all this if I do 'make xconfig' it says ***No rule to make target 'xconfig'. Stop.
First off... "make xconfig" is usually the first step in re-compiling your kernel... there's no need to do that.
pcnet_cs is the module for your ethernet card, the drivers are loaded, everything is fine as far as that goes. How do you normally get a connection to whatever network it is you are on: dhcp, pppoe, a static IP? If dhcp, then as root:
dhcpcd eth0
Back to the sound card, if that is indeed the exact chipset of your soundcard, that module should have loaded. Then again, you are running a 2 year old copy of Mandrake. The command, again as root, "lspci" will list the onboard PCI devices and their chipsets... that'll make us certain of the sound card info.
None of those 2 commands work. I use a cable modem and a Lynksys hub.
I found this Linux Mandrake in my cds and I want to give it a try.
If you can suggest me other Linux compilation I will be happy to try it. This Mandrake is getting on my nerves. :-)
Although, I would appreciate a Linux that would work with my Toshiba Laptop 1605 Satelitte.
Thanks,
m_m
PS: Why would "make" is not working suddenly? (No rules for target)
Sorry, for either of those commands to be in your path, you have to be root, and not su'ed into root either... another way to enter them would be their full pathname:
Well, okay I never recommend re-installing as part of my usual schtick, but yeah, if you're new to this and just need a learner distro, then: Mandy 8.2... 9.0 will be out in October, but really its not worth waiting for. RedHat 7.3 is alright too, and SuSe 8.0; those are the newest of the newbie friendlies: RedHat and Mandrake you can just download the ISOs, SuSe is a little nastier about giving things away... really its just easiest to buy the box set.
Yeah a newer distro will definately get you past these dinky little annoying problems and on to the great big annoying problems!
