lexmark all-in-one printer config

I'm running Mandrake 9.0 with kernel 2.4.19-16mdk, a custom kernel with usb support. Gigabyte 5aa board with AMD K6-2 533mhz processor clocking 550mhz, 100mhz bus speed, 320mb RAM. The motherboard is USB capable, but I disabled it in the bios and installed a pci usb card.
My problem is with a new printer, a Lexmark x1150m multi-function printer, scanner copier
I bought to replace a Lexmark z45. The z45 had been working great with cups z43 configuration and cups/z42 drivers, I've tried several cups configurations/drivers and can't get it to do anything, one of the configurations would start to work, I could hear the printer grunt a little, then nothing. A quick "ps ax" on the command line would show a print process running, subsequent checks would indicate it had dissolved into the etheral waves.
Please don't laugh, I bought this thing thinking I would not have a problem since the z45 had worked so well. If somebody could tell me where I could download what I need or how to write a driver for it ( maybe an online tutorial? ). I have some experience writing bash shell scripts, but not much actual programming.
Lexmark support is no help, a google search yielded nothing.
