Issue after successful install of Nvidia GTX 850M Driver - Fedora 23 4.4.9-300.fc23.x86_64

Hi Guys,

I recently isntalled fedora 23 on my MSI gaming laptop and I really like using it. I have been trying to get external graphics card to work as currently it looks like its not being used.

I have successfully installed it using the below guide:

http://www.if-not-true-then-false.co...-nvidia-guide/

Following the guide I have managed to successfully install the driver:

Code:
nvidia-installer log file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log'
creation time: Wed Jun 1 09:11:17 2016
installer version: 364.19

PATH: /usr/lib64/qt-3.3/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/root/bin

nvidia-installer command line:
    ./nvidia-installer

Using: nvidia-installer ncurses user interface
-> Detected 8 CPUs online; setting concurrency level to 8.
-> Tagging shared libraries with chcon -t textrel_shlib_t.
-> License accepted.
-> Installing NVIDIA driver version 364.19.
-> Would you like to register the kernel module sources with DKMS? This will allow DKMS to automatically build a new module, if you install a different kernel later. (Answer: Yes)
-> Installing both new and classic TLS OpenGL libraries.
-> Installing both new and classic TLS 32bit OpenGL libraries.
-> Install NVIDIA's 32-bit compatibility libraries? (Answer: Yes)
-> Will install GLVND GLX client libraries.
Looking for install checker script at ./libglvnd_install_checker/check-libglvnd-install.sh
   executing: '/bin/sh ./libglvnd_install_checker/check-libglvnd-install.sh'...

The problem is once I reboot my laptop after the successful install I get an error message:

Code:
"Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again."
I tried adding the output of the /sbin/lspci output but its to long. Will try to attach it

I dont have Fedora 23 yet but try:

Quote:
less /var/log/Xorg.0.log
In order to see if there is a problem configuring Xorg at startup.

Or use:

Quote:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
To see the errors in the log file.

I do not use nvidia drivers because they are buggy, is bette to use the open nv driver, but maybe you can play something and nvidia driver has better performance.

check:

lsmod in order to see if nvidia has been loaded or what driver are currently in use.

If you don't see the nvidia in the list, as root, try:

Quote:
modprobe nvidia
and see what happens.

Hi ppesci,

Here's the output you requested

Code:
[root@localhost judd]# cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Im thinking that I might try using fedora 22 instead. It's a fresh install so im not really loosing anything and from what I can tell 22 is still in support.

What do you guys think?

I has been a Fedora user for many years, but every new version appear to be worst and worst from Fedora 19.

The message you posted:

Quote:
Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. All extensions have been disabled as a precaution.
appear to me too windows oriented where the user has no control at all.

The problem is systemd taking more and more control over Linux. You can migrate to Fedora 22 by now as a good solution, but eventually, if you want to take the control back, you will need to migrate to another Linux version without systemd.

Unfortunately, systemd has been adopted by almost all Linux distributions . PCLinuxOS, Devuan (beta), Gentoo and few others distributions appear to have options to be free of systemd. BSD based OS are free of systemd too but are very defferent to Linux.

Sorry by the bad news.

I recently isntalled fedora 23 on my MSI gaming laptop and I really like using it. I have been trying to get external graphics card to work as currently it looks like its not being used.
What do you mean by "external graphics"?

Either way, the guide for installing nvidia drivers that you used is probably not the best guide. I'm sorry that it appears to come up as the top google hit. A better guide is here:

http://rpmfusion.org/Howto/nVidia

RPMFusion is a great resource for how to do "normal" stuff on Fedora (things that Fedora, for legal and ideological reasons, do not support officially). I would check it before following random guides online. The instructions given on the site you refer to are flat out bad; they tell you to install a driver that will be made invalid by a kernel update.

Undo what you have done from that site and follow the RPMFusion method instead.

Thanks for the reply notKlaatu

I mean external graphics as in a graphics card external to the motherboard i.e not the on-board graphics chip in the motherboard. Not sure if this is technically correct lingo, it's just something I have picked up from my peers along the way.

So I installed the below package:

Code:
GeForce 8/9/200

dnf install akmod-nvidia-340xx "kernel-devel-uname-r == $(uname -r)"
dnf update -y
and now my system starts boots and then gives me the original error message I was encountering:

Code:
"Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again."
If only Nvidia and linux distros got along Not sure what log files I can post to help debug?

If you want to see the systemd log, you must to use:

journalctl

Check the man pages to get more information.
