ISA modem problems in Slack 8.1

I have an ISA modem installed in my computer, which never wanted to work under Windows (but sometimes did) and doesn't want to work under Linux. I use Slackware 8.1 without X installed. I ran pppsetup with what seemed to be the right parameters. When I run ppp-go, nothing happens and the system just prints another command prompt. If I run it again I get the message:

Error Signal 2
Connect script failed.

What does a Signal 2 mean? The only thing I'm not sure about is the port the modem is on-- several years ago I wrote "COM4" in marker on the modem card itself, I guess because I kept forgetting what port it was on under Windows. I have it on ttys3 now.

Or, is the modem just broken?

well, I appreciate the help, but it's already on ttyS3, i think
...unless that's a lowercase 's', in which case, i will try your suggestion

if the modem is plug n plague, then ttyS3 might not
have the right irq for that port.
you might have to play with setserial to get the port
to the right settings.
it's also possible your kernel doesn't have support for
pnp devices and doesn't set them up
i remember from dos years ago testing for an isa
modem with
atdt5551000 > com4
or something similar from the dos prompt
to see if the modem was working on com4.
i would listen for the modem to dial the number.
then ath > com4 to hang up
i can't remember whether there was a copy or anything
preceeding the command or not.

I'm not sure if this is a P 'n P device. I've had it since 1995, it's one of those no-name models, and I actually think it's only a 14.4... so it's probably not.

The computer it's installed in is at home and I'm at school... so I'll try to fix it in a couple of weeks.

PnP boot up configurator

I used to have a plug and play ISA sound card. During the install process SuSE included a plug and play setup program and created a script which ran at boot time to configur the ISA card. I never had to fool around with it. It
just worked. Configuring the sound was a different issue altogather. The PnP configurator simply set up IRQs, etc. You probably have this program available on your distribution. If your distro doesn't have plug and play configurator support then here are some links:

back when modems were 14.4, and i remember logging
into a bbs in 1993 with a 14.4 modem, and if you connected at that speed, they said, "Man, You're Flying!", they weren't plug n' play, they were just jumper set to a port.

Thanks for the tips.

isapnptools is on my box. I tried to use it but I couldn't figure it out, but I'll keep it in mind.
