ISA unsupported on Slack 10.1?

Okay, bear with me here, please, because I am an ubernewbie to linux.

I just inherited an old 300 mHz P3 from a friend and did a fresh install of Slackware 10.1 onto it. Everything seems to be working fine thus far except that it won't recognize my modem (a US Robotics Sportster) or the sound card (SB Awe 64). The only thing that these two seem to have in common that is unique to them and nothing else is that they are both plugged into ISA slots. So, I'm curious: does Slackware 10.1 not support ISA slots?

I've not used ISA with Slackware 10.1 as far as I remmeber... but it should support it.
Regarding the soundcard, did you run alsaconf?

You know, I thought I had, but when I ran it again it worked just fine. My computer is loud and obnoxious now. (Just gotta figure out how to turn it down....like I said, complete linux ubernewb.)

Now if I can just figure out why it won't recognize my modem. My best bet is that I have the wrong COM port specified. Is there a quick way to reconfigure the modem?

I haven't used dial-up on Slackware, but I think pppsetup is the right tool to configure it.

To turn your computer down, take a look at the shutdown command. Remember that most commands in Linux has a man page that explains it, you can access it with: man command
So, to see how shutdown works, use: man shutdown

Not really trying to use it for dial-up; more interested in being able to use it to send/receive faxes. I did try using the pppsetup, though, to test the modem and I could never get it to recognize the modem. I kept getting messages that the modem did not respond.

What I meant by "turn down" was "reduce the volume," not "shut off." :-) I have managed to figure out how to shut it off.

It would be good if you can make Linux to see your modem.
I've seen this programs as recommened to get fax working on Slackware: efax-gtk (this seems to be a frontend to efax) and Hylafax
They were mentioned here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=316197
and here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=292044
You've to search their homepages and how to use them because I never did, here is a Slackware package for Hylafax: http://www.linuxpackages.net/pkg_details.php?id=5790

First, what exactly do you mean, "it won't recognize my modem"? Have you looked through the dmesg output and/or /var/log/messages and it's not listed there? Or you just mean it doesn't work? Try that first to see what the kernel sees:

Code:
dmesg | less
Code:
less /var/log/messages
Second, are you certain Linux supports the modem? Is it a hardware modem or a winmodem? If the former, then chances are it does. If the later then it's kinda ify. Do you know what chipset is on the modem? Try the ScanModem tool at http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/. There is also alot of info on modems at http://www.linmodems.org/, as well as some howtos at http://www.tldp.org, like this one:
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Winmodems-...OWTO.html#toc2

You could also try loading the ISA PNP module. To do that run modprobe isapnp.

First, do you have isapnptools package installed?

Second, if you do, did you run pnpdump?
Code:
#pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf
Check the /etc/isapnp.conf file, it may need some editing afterwards.

If I remember correctly the volume control is easily accessed with "alsamixer" from any shell.

Just try alsa+tab to see the correct spelling of the command.
