Is intel's Hyper-Threading a must for Linux ???

i'm gonna buy a new CPU and up to now i was going for an AMD64 Venice when they arrive..
but lately i am wondering .. since linux is a multithreaded OS will Hyper-Threading gonna boost my system ???
i have to say here that i will use winXP but i don't play games at ALL (except brood-war )
i want this cpu for office use, movies, programming, web-surfing etc...

if HT is good for Linux i wont mind giving the money for an intel_64 2.8 intead of an AMD64 3.0 ...i'm gonna buy one of those models 64bit 2.8GHz or 3.0GHz no matter the company..prices for those models are almost the same and i am not willing to pay for more GHz :P

but my main question is the usability of hyper-threading on linux which fully supports intel's HT and for that i would like to read your opinions

any web-links to Linux benches with HT vs no HT or similar to what i am asking are always welcome

i won't wait for dual cores and that's another reason that i am asking for HT.

PS:i'm using slack

Linux supports Hyper-threading but HT alone can't boost performance much. try searching www.google.com/linux for HT performance and there are lots of pages. heres 2 articles:

here's some links:

http://www.2cpu.com/articles/41_1.html

http://www-106.ibm.com/developerwork...?ca=dgr-lnxw01

i found them with these google searches:

http://www.google.com/linux?q=hyperthreading

http://www.google.com/linux?q=hyperthreading+benchmark

also, the 64-bit slackware port really sucks (at least for now), i'd suggest using another distro...

just my two cents...

I did not have HT working for a few days with my new computer and now that I do have HT, the system feels much more responsive and smooth. I'm not sure if HT is "must" for Linux but it makes your life a bit more enjoyable if you are willing to pay for the ride...

My experience is that the HT technology does little good. It certainly isn't worth spending more money on. Even with it AMDs rated comparably perform better than a P4 with HT.

Stick with AMD. intels get too hot. AMD is more bang for your buck. Also other factors come into play, like memory if you only have 128/256 it wont matter what CPU you have. I'd say AMD64 with atleast 1gig or more ddr400, even an intel with the same specs is gonna be slower than the AMD.
