Intel Soft Modem Question

I am going to overhaul my computer, and the new motherboard I am looking at doesn't have a modem with it (like AMR/CNR). I am looking at the Hiro Intel 56K Data Fax Modem. It says it has an Intel chipset, which I am pretty sure there are Linux drivers for. If anyone knows about this modem or Intel modem chipsets on Linux, I would like to hear your experiences.

N.B. I don't have the money to spend on a hardware modem, besides, the price difference is just not worth it to me.

AFAIK the best way to determine if it's Linux compatible would be to look for the chipset, then look it up at your distro's HCL or linmodems.org.
A more simplistic POV would be to just distrust cheap internal modems and go for good 'ol state of the art external ones...
