red hat uses the rpm system for dealing with software packages...
basically, to install an rpm:
rpm -i example-package.rpm
to remove an rpm:
rpm -e example-package
(notice this doesn't need the ".rpm" at the end...)
to update an rpm:
rpm -U example-package.rpm
